Gum Disease in Jacksonville, Florida

If the dentist determines you do have gum disease, X-rays will be taken to determine if there is any bone loss. Then, a deep cleaning will be needed to remove any tartar from the gum line. Our mouths are full of bacteria. Most of the time, brushing and flossing can eliminate the plaque on our teeth where the bacteria have formed. In some cases where the plaque hardens, it forms what is known as tartar. Only a dentist or hygienist can perform a cleaning thorough enough to remove tartar from teeth.

Symptoms and Causes of Gum Disease

Most people do not show signs of gum disease until they reach their 30s or 40s, but younger patients can get it as well. Some risk factors for gum disease include smoking, certain medications, diabetes and heredity. Patients wonder how they will know if they develop gum disease, and there are several symptoms that will occur. Some of these symptoms are red or swollen gums, bad breath that lingers, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth and painful gums.

There are different stages of gum disease. The first stage is gingivitis, and this stage is mild. The bacteria in your mouth will cause inflammation of your gums.

In this stage, there is usually not any bone loss, and it can be reversed by a deep cleaning from your dentist or hygienist.

The second stage of gum disease is called periodontitis, which is inflammation around the teeth. This stage is when the gums pull away from the teeth and allow a space to be formed. If this stage is not treated, there can be bone loss, and the tissue that holds the teeth in place can be damaged. In some cases, the teeth become loose and may fall out or need to be removed.

I have extremely high dental anxiety, and Dr. Murphy and his hygienist were so calming and gentle on my sensitive teeth. Their offices are really clean and nice with TVs in each exam room. The X-rays were really easy with new equipment and everything was shown to me digitally on the screen. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a new dentist in the area! I’m glad I came in!
